Christopher Columbus reached the islands of Trinidad and Tobago on his third voyage to the New World in 1498.
Nothing much happened after that till the British took an interest in the islands in the early 1500s. For the next few centuries it was a hotly fought over territory with the British, Spanish, Dutch and French all laying claim to it.
